Yorkshire 3 Peaks 2019 – Join Us!

Please help us to raise much needed funds to sustain all of the groups & activities that we currently run and to help us meet the ongoing demand for Speech & Language sessions and develop other areas of support such as Education Health & Care plans, physiotherapy & occupational therapy.

3 peaks

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is a demanding but rewarding walk which takes in the summits of Pen-y-ghent (694 metres – 2,276 feet), Whernside (736 metres – 2,415 feet) and Ingleborough (723 metres 2,372 feet) all in one circular route. There is no set starting point, but the vast majority of walkers start at Horton in Ribblesdale, taking in the summits in the order shown above. The walk is 24.5 miles (39.2km) long and takes in approximately 5,000 feet (1,600 metres) of climbing. The walking is over a variety of terrains and the paths, especially over the previously boggy sections, have been improved immensely over recent years by work undertaken by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.

The walk follows a circular route which finishes back at the car park so there is no need for additional transport arrangements. Target walking time is 12 hours. The cost of the day is £40 per person (10% of this will be donated back to Sunshine & Smiles by the walk guide) and this covers pre-challenge support & guidance and an experienced guide, David Wilson, throughout the day itself.

You can set up your own, or a team, fundraising page via our Local Giving site: https://localgiving.org/charity/sunshineandsmiles/

We Thank You For Helping Create 21 Co.

We Thank You For Helping Create 21 Co.

It’s nearly 3 weeks since we opened our Shop and Café, 21 Co. and we can’t quite believe the amount of support we’ve received.

We want to reach out and thank everyone who has been a part of our journey so far, whether it’s a donation, volunteering, or popping in to see how we’re doing. It all means so much. Not forgetting the amount of coverage we’ve received locally, nationally, and internationally on radio, TV, and online.

The idea of offering young adults who have Down Syndrome opportunities to gain work experience had always been a distant dream of ours, one we didn’t think we’d be able to achieve within 5 years of becoming a charity. This is only the beginning of something great, and we only hope that we can continue to develop our café and to ensure other young adults who have Down Syndrome are given the same opportunities.

Thank you so much…

Schroders Real Estate Investment Trust, Wesleyan Foundation, St Chad’s Parish Fund, Wades Charity, Anton Jurgens Trust, Sir George Martin Trust, Cielo Coffee Roasters, Now Then Sunshine, Ark Display, Headingley Development Trust, Phoenix & Wolfe Accountancy, Wendy Jones-Blackett, Leeds Live, Metro, The Independent, Sky News, BBC Yorkshire, North Leeds Mumbler, Yorkshire Evening Post, Homestyle UK, CNN, Coffee House Magazine, Earth, Wit & Style Magazine, and This Morning.

How did it happen?

Since our Café 21 pop up at Carousel in March last year we have been looking for a long-term venue to have our very own shop and more importantly; offer work experience and training opportunities to our young adults who have Down Syndrome. We are extremely excited for this next chapter, and we invite you to join us on this journey. Not only will this be a great hub for our families too, but an opportunity to raise funds for the charity also.

Ailith Harley-Roberts, service manager at Sunshine & Smiles said,

National statistics show that only 17 per cent of all adults with a learning disability are in paid employment. Clearly, it can be difficult for the young people we support to get the work experience and training they need to secure jobs.

Ailith Nominated for Inspirational Individual of the Year!

Ailith Nominated for Inspirational Individual of the Year!

Our Service Manager, Ailith Harley-Roberts has been nominated for a Yorkshire Choice Award!

Ailith is in the Inspirational Individual category and votes are now open to the public. Sunshine and Smiles would not exist if it weren’t for the hard work of its supporters, volunteers, and staff. Ailith is the rock of our charity, and although an award couldn’t express how dearly we appreciate her, it would be the recognition she deserves.

Ailith“The Yorkshire Choice Awards recognise local people and independent businesses that are an inspiration in their field. The categories cover a wide range of backgrounds and skill sets, yet they all have one thing in common… The will to achieve!” – Yorkshire Choice.

The voting process is really simple, and shouldn’t take longer than 2 minutes. CLICK HERE to make your Yorkshire Choice!

*Voting is limited to one per IP address, but you can vote for as many people in as many categories as you like with your one visit.

M and S Bag PackWe are very pleased to be Moortown Marks & Spencer’s Charity of the Year for 2018 – 2019 and following on from their support with the book giveaway in July we thought we’d lend a hand and pack some of their customers shopping!

It was an incredibly successful day with the help of volunteers across Leeds getting involved, and not only did we raise awareness for Sunshine & Smiles, but we also collected £400 of donations!

Thank you so much to all the volunteers who spent their Saturday afternoon bagging up shopping, you were all brilliant!

Early Development Groups start in September and there’s still time to sign up!

Early Development Group
Early Development Groups

We are very pleased to be able to start offering Early Development groups starting from September 2018.

Initially we will have two groups running on a Friday morning, on a fortnightly basis, there will be one group for children aged 12 – 18 months and one group for children aged 18 – 24 months.

We will be using tools, resources & techniques from See & Learn, the Early Years Developmental Journal, The Portage Model and linking with our Speech & Language therapists to ensure consistency & continuity.

The groups will be 1 hour of structured support & learning followed by 30 minutes of social time with snacks.

Our aim will be to develop more groups to include all pre-school age children in the longer term.

Please let us know if you would like a place for your child in either of these groups by emailing ailith@sunshineandsmiles.org.uk or ringing 07902 054355.
