21 Co. to Host Headingley Festival Event

21 Co. to Host Headingley Festival Event

The Headingley Festival of Ideas will be taking place from 9th May and promises a feast of information, discussion and debate on the theme of “borders,” and it’s happening all over Headingley including at 21 Co.

It’s all about creative ideas which may not necessarily lead to something – although some might – but the main purpose is to tap into the joy of ideas, debate and discussion. This festival aims to appeal to the wide variety of people in Headingley, and to all age groups.

On Thursday 16th May the Bordering on the Criminal workshop will be happening at 21 Co. from 7:30pm until 9pm.

What can you expect from the evening?

The UK’s need for penal reform.

The Prison Reform Trust works for a just, humane and effective penal system, examining its workings, informing its players and influencing its rulers. It aims to reduce unnecessary imprisonment, improve prison conditions and promote equality and human rights.

We will hear from Paula Harriott, Head of Prisoner Engagement at the Trust, about why change is needed and how current campaigns are addressing the political issues and supporting prisoners and their families. Followed by questions and open discussion.

More about the festival

This year’s Festival, due to take place from 9 – 25 May in Headingley.

Highlights this year include a panel discussion with Alex Sobel MP and others, looking at the UK’s interpretation of the Refugee Convention and what it means on the ground for people seeking asylum here.  There will be a day of events and presentations at South Parade Baptist Church looking at the impacts of borders and walls around the world – ranging from our own Hadrians’ Wall to the Balkans Peace Park area and the nitty gritty of working for Medecins sans Frontieres in areas of conflict. The day will finish with an evening showing of the film ‘Les Sauteurs’.

21 Co. Shop & Café is Now Open!

21 Co. Shop & Café is Now Open!

Sunshine and Smiles’ newest project 21 Co. has opened in the heart of Headingley, offering opportunities to young adults in Leeds who have Down Syndrome.

Catherine and Louise make a dream team!

21 Co. Shop and Café opened its doors on Saturday 12 January, and will operate as a gallery and coffee shop for a minimum of 6 months, and potentially longer if successful.

Friends and family of the charity Sunshine and Smiles came to support us on our first day, and it was lovely to see so many locals pop in to try our homemade cakes and Cielo coffee.

Since our Café 21 pop up at Carousel in March last year we have been looking for a long-term venue to have our very own shop and more importantly; offer work experience and training opportunities to our young adults who have Down Syndrome. We are extremely excited for this next chapter, and we invite you to join us on this journey. Not only will this be a great hub for our families too, but an opportunity to raise funds for the charity also.

Ailith Harley-Roberts, service manager at Sunshine & Smiles said,

National statistics show that only 17 per cent of all adults with a learning disability are in paid employment. Clearly, it can be difficult for the young people we support to get the work experience and training they need to secure jobs.

Following our Café 21 pilot project we were determined to get something more long term off the ground! We will be aiming to meet the needs of young people with Down syndrome in the workplace and to create a long-term model where participants are treated like any other trainees and can access training and paid work.

There’s also a chance to grab the last few copies of our 2019 Sunshine and Smiles Calendar, which is now on sale!
