Yorkshire 3 Peaks 2019 – Join Us!

Please help us to raise much needed funds to sustain all of the groups & activities that we currently run and to help us meet the ongoing demand for Speech & Language sessions and develop other areas of support such as Education Health & Care plans, physiotherapy & occupational therapy.

3 peaks

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is a demanding but rewarding walk which takes in the summits of Pen-y-ghent (694 metres – 2,276 feet), Whernside (736 metres – 2,415 feet) and Ingleborough (723 metres 2,372 feet) all in one circular route. There is no set starting point, but the vast majority of walkers start at Horton in Ribblesdale, taking in the summits in the order shown above. The walk is 24.5 miles (39.2km) long and takes in approximately 5,000 feet (1,600 metres) of climbing. The walking is over a variety of terrains and the paths, especially over the previously boggy sections, have been improved immensely over recent years by work undertaken by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.

The walk follows a circular route which finishes back at the car park so there is no need for additional transport arrangements. Target walking time is 12 hours. The cost of the day is £40 per person (10% of this will be donated back to Sunshine & Smiles by the walk guide) and this covers pre-challenge support & guidance and an experienced guide, David Wilson, throughout the day itself.

You can set up your own, or a team, fundraising page via our Local Giving site: https://localgiving.org/charity/sunshineandsmiles/

Dman & Friends Present: Sunshine & Smiles – An Inclusive and Safe Space Celebration of Leeds Night Life

Dman & Friends Present: Sunshine & Smiles – An Inclusive and Safe Space Celebration of Leeds Night Life

We are proud to be hosting another ‘Dman and Friends’ extravaganza at Hyde Park Book Club. This will be another safe space and family friendly event in celebration of the Leeds night life as well as being a fundraiser for Sunshine and Smiles – Leeds Down Syndrome Network.

Sunshine and Smiles is a Leeds based network supporting people with Down Syndrome, fulfils a vital role in the community by offering the only specific support network across Leeds for children & young people who have Down syndrome, and their families. If you want to get involved and volunteer please contact the charity directly or one of the hosts and we will be more than happy to put you in contact.

DJ’s will be playing in both the upstairs and downstairs area and will be teamed with interactive video displays, creative workshops and hopefully some interactive art work.

This will be a family event from 4pm till 11pm with calm lighting, visuals and lowered volume levels so that everyone can enjoy themselves. There will also be wheelchair access from the back of the venue.

As part of our safe space & policy there will also be volunteers from start to finish in brightly coloured vests to help moderate and ensure everyone enjoys their night to the fullest extent. There will also be very friendly and experienced security onsite alongside event organisers on hand to help deal with any issues that arise.

There will also be for part of the night representatives from the charity around and information and leaflets distributed on them. These volunteers will also be periodically carrying donation buckets with a suggested £4 donation from 11pm onward and pay as you feel before this point.

From 10pm onward the night will increase slowly in volume and tempo the visuals still staying at a calm level. This change will mainly be felt in the downstairs room with the upstairs room keeping a calm and atmospheric vibe to maintain what we hope will be the accessible nature of the event.

DJs will be spread across 2 rooms – the upstairs room will have music playing from 4pm and the downstairs room will start at 10pm and finish late.

Lots of teams took part throughout the day, even our Service Manager Ailith ended up getting involved!
As well as the rowing event, freshly baked cakes were being sold to increase donations and a raffle also took place. It was a fun packed day full of exercise, cake consuming and of course, smiles.
Thanks to everyone who took part to raise money for both charities, the total amount raised was £1,000 which will be split between the two, which is amazing! 🙂 Congratulations to Sagars who were the winning team!
Keep up to date with our future charities fundraisers here!
