Yorkshire 3 Peaks 2019 – Join Us!

Please help us to raise much needed funds to sustain all of the groups & activities that we currently run and to help us meet the ongoing demand for Speech & Language sessions and develop other areas of support such as Education Health & Care plans, physiotherapy & occupational therapy.

3 peaks

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is a demanding but rewarding walk which takes in the summits of Pen-y-ghent (694 metres – 2,276 feet), Whernside (736 metres – 2,415 feet) and Ingleborough (723 metres 2,372 feet) all in one circular route. There is no set starting point, but the vast majority of walkers start at Horton in Ribblesdale, taking in the summits in the order shown above. The walk is 24.5 miles (39.2km) long and takes in approximately 5,000 feet (1,600 metres) of climbing. The walking is over a variety of terrains and the paths, especially over the previously boggy sections, have been improved immensely over recent years by work undertaken by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.

The walk follows a circular route which finishes back at the car park so there is no need for additional transport arrangements. Target walking time is 12 hours. The cost of the day is £40 per person (10% of this will be donated back to Sunshine & Smiles by the walk guide) and this covers pre-challenge support & guidance and an experienced guide, David Wilson, throughout the day itself.

You can set up your own, or a team, fundraising page via our Local Giving site: https://localgiving.org/charity/sunshineandsmiles/

Let us know if you would like to join us by contacting ailith@sunshineandsmiles.org.uk. There’s also more information on the Facebook page, here!

Thank You Stockdales Restaurant

Every penny donated to Sunshine & Smiles goes directly towards the vital support we offer to our children, young people and families; whether it is Speech & Language sessions, fruit and milk for our baby group, transport for families, or paying our trained staff to support families or help our young adults into training and work.

We are so grateful for every donation we receive and it’s those moments of generosity that enable us to continue to support more people every day.

We would like to say a BIG thank you to some people who have recently shown their support.

Thank you to Moorlands School who took part in the 21 Challenge on Friday 17th May.

Throughout the day children completed sponsored challenges to raise awareness and donations for Sunshine and Smiles. They did 21 minutes of singing in Foxes and Reception, Year 1 dances for 21 minutes, Year 2 created 21 origami penguins, Year 3 saw 21 lengths, Year 4 did a bush tucker trial eating 21 items, Year 5 did a non-stop talking challenge, and Year 6 scavenged for 21 tiny items to fit inside a matchbox. As well as that, all form teachers agreed to have 21 wet sponges thrown at them!

What an amazing effort by the children and teachers at Moorlands, and it means so much for you to tailor your challenges around Chromosome 21. Thank you!

Thank you to Jack Gale, Jessica Jaryckyj, and Matthew Lingard from Walker Morris and Arslaan Butt for running the Leeds Half Marathon on Sunday 12th May in aid of Sunshine & Smiles. It’s events like this that really raise the profile of our charity and the donations raised make so much difference.

Thank you to Ailith Harley-Roberts who ran her own “Not Leeds Half Marathon” on Sunday 12th May. Ailith decided to run her own 13.1 miles from 0530am on Sunday morning to raise funds for Sunshine & Smiles. This meant she was able to join the supporters at Leeds Half and cheer our runners along the way.

Adela Cut Her Hair for Sunshine & Smiles

Adela Cut Her Hair for Sunshine & Smiles

adelaThank you Adela Parzanese Guerrero for raising £115 for Sunshine & Smiles, as part of donating your hair to the Princess Trust Foundation.

Adela is one of our parents and big part of the Sunshine & Smiles team, and we thank you for raising awareness of the charity and raising money too.

She said,

My beautiful and talented friend Yvonne Hall had the crazy job to cut my hair today so I could donate it to a great cause which it the Princess Trust Foundation, but also to help me raise awareness and Funds for Valentino’s two support groups! She didn’t charge me but she decided to donate the money that I would have paid her to the Gofundme page I created. Please please do donate and help me raise as much as you can or share the link.

Valentino and his friends and many more within the community benefit from this money which goes for family swim sessions, balance bike rides, speech and language, dancing, football among others. Thank you all who watched the live event and for your lovely compliments!

The target for Adela’s fundraiser is £200 and if you would like to be involved, you can find her page here – Gofundme

It makes a huge difference when volunteers take on challenges to raise funds for us, and we are incredibly thankful to all our runners.

It’s not too late to support Ailith by donating to her Local Giving page. This year Ailith has pledged to run, cycle & swim 2130 miles for Sunshine & Smiles aiming to raise funds to buy equipment for Sunshine & Smiles! She also posted on Facebook earlier this week that for her Birthday (16 November) this year, she would rather her friends and family donated to Sunshine and Smiles rather than buying her gifts. What a lovely gesture.

Thanks again to all our runners, you all did amazingly! 🙂

The runners will be starting in Leeds City Centre and making their way along Kirkstall Road to Kirkstall Abbey before returning to finish outside the Town Hall.

Alternatively you can support Ailith by donating to her Local Giving page. This year Ailith has pledged to run, cycle & swim 2130 miles for Sunshine & Smiles aiming to raise funds to buy equipment such as a full size changing bed for Sunshine & Smiles!

Good luck Ailith from all of us at Sunshine and Smiles! 🙂
