We are very pleased to be able to offer our families 3 workshops around Positive Behaviour Support. This will be our final workshop.
The sessions will be run by Cherie Andrews, Mum to Luke, who attends Sunshine & Smiles. Cherie also has 23 years experience and knowledge in a professional capacity as a registered learning disability nurse and health visitor. She worked in the Learning Disability Nursing team for 7 years and in Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) for 3 years.
Her keen interest and experience in these roles was positive behaviour support where she developed, set up & ran a course for families as well as helping to develop a positive behaviour pathway within CAMHS.
Cherie has extensive experience supporting parents & carers in group sessions and on an individual basis.
The aims of the sessions will be to:
Look at understanding triggers for different behaviours
Look at positive strategies to distract or minimise different behaviours
Explore coping mechanisms & strategies for families
Developing positive behaviour support ideas & plans
Although Cherie will be facilitating the sessions and bringing her experience, skills & knowledge we hope that this will be an opportunity to families to share and explore any specific issues in a safe & supportive environment
We can offer space for 8 – 10 families on these first 3 sessions. (a family can be up to 2 adults who have a caring responsibility for a child; e.g parent or carer, extended family member or personal assistant). We will hope to have a number of volunteers on hand to offer support & activities for children in a separate room if childcare is an issue).
If you would like to book a place on these sessions please email: email@example.com with the names of the adult or adults who will be attending and any children (with their ages) who will be coming so we can ensure we have sufficient volunteers in attendance.
Our Dancework sessions are run by qualified & experienced dance teacher, Laura Jakes who provides excellent tuition, as well as the support from an amazing group of volunteers.
The main aim for Danceworks is to have fun and enjoy the session, but there is structure to allow children and young people to learn routines. Last year Sunshine and Smiles performed at the Danceworks annual show, fingers crossed for next year!
These sessions are aimed at children aged 5 – 9, and will start at 12:30 pm at the community hub.
Please let us know if you need transport to attend by contacting: firstname.lastname@example.org or 07902 054355.
Sunshine and Smiles Free Mini Movers Dance Sessions!
Our Mini Movers sessions are back by popular demand with earlier classes starting from 1130 am. We understood that families were wanting to attend these sessions earlier in the year but our original slots weren’t always at appropriate times, so we’ve moved them forward to enable more to join!
Katie Aynsley, who runs the sessions, has four years’ experience of working with children, young people and adults with disabilities. She has worked towards becoming a freelance dance teacher where she has volunteered, assisted and taught various dance sessions within the community. She now works with local dance organisations Mesh Dance and Phoenix Dance theatre who provide dance within the community for children and young people with additional needs.
Structure of the session
The session is structured as follows:
Free play , circle time, hello song, name game, share a movement, warm up, travelling & musical statues, more free play, circle time with a theme, singing, movement/dance activity.
Using an inclusive approach the Mini Movers Dance Sessions are created to encourage the children to explore their imagination and use their bodies through play and movement. Props, music and singing are used to promote a creative environment where the children can have fun and the sessions are made accessible to all.
Each week will have a different theme. For example; transport, animals, weather, seasonal themes likes Halloween and Christmas, and many more!
Mini Movers is a FREE session, so no need to pre book – just turn up and get ready to boogie!
Our Early Development Group for children aged 12 months to 2-years-old.
We will be using tools, resources & techniques from See & Learn, the Early Years Developmental Journal, The Portage Model and linking with our Speech & Language therapists to ensure consistency & continuity.
Our long term aim will be to eventually develop more groups to include all pre-school ages. If you would be interested in a place for your child in these groups please email email@example.com or ring 07902 054355.
Runs on a Friday morning, every 2 weeks.
1 hour of structured support & learning followed by 30 minutes of social time with snacks.
This week marks Trustees week (12 – 16 November); an annual event that showcases the fantastic work that trustees do for their charities, communities and the sector. Events all around the country will celebrate the achievements of trustees, as well as highlight opportunities for you to get involved with a local charity or voluntary organisation at board level.
In this week we would like to thank our Trustees; Marc, Jonathan, and Katie, as well as all our previous Trustees from the past 5 years. We would like to thank you for your time, as well as your invaluable expertise, knowledge and governance. Your guidance and support has been a huge part of the growth of Sunshine and Smiles and from all the staff and our families we want you to know how much we appreciate you, not only in this week, but every day. Thank you.
Thank you so much to the volunteers at Lloyds Bank for clearing and cutting back our front and back gardens, not forgetting mending the fences!
Every year Lloyds Banking Group give an opportunity to their colleagues to spend at least one day volunteering for a charity or community project of their choice. This year, two of Lloyds departments chose Sunshine and Smiles, and this was their second day fixing up Stainbeck Community Hall.
This volunteering programme is hoping to deliver 2.3 million hours by 2020 and have already reached 1 million, and we are so unbelievably grateful that they chose us as one of their charities.
Big thanks to every volunteer from the Lloyds Banking Group!
