We Thank You For Helping Create 21 Co.

We Thank You For Helping Create 21 Co.

It’s nearly 3 weeks since we opened our Shop and Café, 21 Co. and we can’t quite believe the amount of support we’ve received.

We want to reach out and thank everyone who has been a part of our journey so far, whether it’s a donation, volunteering, or popping in to see how we’re doing. It all means so much. Not forgetting the amount of coverage we’ve received locally, nationally, and internationally on radio, TV, and online.

The idea of offering young adults who have Down Syndrome opportunities to gain work experience had always been a distant dream of ours, one we didn’t think we’d be able to achieve within 5 years of becoming a charity. This is only the beginning of something great, and we only hope that we can continue to develop our café and to ensure other young adults who have Down Syndrome are given the same opportunities.

Thank you so much…

Schroders Real Estate Investment Trust, Wesleyan Foundation, St Chad’s Parish Fund, Wades Charity, Anton Jurgens Trust, Sir George Martin Trust, Cielo Coffee Roasters, Now Then Sunshine, Ark Display, Headingley Development Trust, Phoenix & Wolfe Accountancy, Wendy Jones-Blackett, Leeds Live, Metro, The Independent, Sky News, BBC Yorkshire, North Leeds Mumbler, Yorkshire Evening Post, Homestyle UK, CNN, Coffee House Magazine, Earth, Wit & Style Magazine, and This Morning.

How did it happen?

Since our Café 21 pop up at Carousel in March last year we have been looking for a long-term venue to have our very own shop and more importantly; offer work experience and training opportunities to our young adults who have Down Syndrome. We are extremely excited for this next chapter, and we invite you to join us on this journey. Not only will this be a great hub for our families too, but an opportunity to raise funds for the charity also.

Ailith Harley-Roberts, service manager at Sunshine & Smiles said,

National statistics show that only 17 per cent of all adults with a learning disability are in paid employment. Clearly, it can be difficult for the young people we support to get the work experience and training they need to secure jobs.

Another Day to Make a Difference for Lloyds Bank

Another Day to Make a Difference for Lloyds Bank

Thank you so much to the volunteers at Lloyds Bank for clearing and cutting back our front and back gardens, not forgetting mending the fences!

Every year Lloyds Banking Group give an opportunity to their colleagues to spend at least one day volunteering for a charity or community project of their choice. This year, two of Lloyds departments chose Sunshine and Smiles, and this was their second day fixing up Stainbeck Community Hall.

This volunteering programme is hoping to deliver 2.3 million hours by 2020 and have already reached 1 million, and we are so unbelievably grateful that they chose us as one of their charities.

Big thanks to every volunteer from the Lloyds Banking Group!

Ailith and Josh Say Thank You to Ison Harrison

ison harrisonSunshine and Smiles has been shortlisted as one of Ison Harrison’s 2018 chosen charities, and will receive one of their 40 prizes.

This year marks the 40th Anniversary of Ison Harrison Solicitors and as part of their celebrations they are supporting 40 local charities by giving away 40 special gifts. The process involves public nominations and we are unbelievably pleased to announce that Sunshine and Smiles has been shortlisted as one of the forty!

Ison Harrison said “we would like to make a donation of £250 to help with the great work you do. We saw on your website that a donation of this value will buy fruit and milk for all your group sessions for a year, so we trust our contribution will help.”

THANK YOU

We would like to thank everyone who nominated Sunshine and Smiles, Ison Harrison for their donation and considering us to be a worthy charity, and every one of you who has supported us over the years – thank you!

Thank you so much to Walker Morris and to Lynsey for choosing us, we are extremely happy and can’t wait to work with you!

A Special Thanks to Wesleyan Foundation

A Special Thanks to Wesleyan Foundation

We were delighted to be invited to attend a celebration event with Wesleyan Assurance and Wesleyan Foundation to say thank you for the funding Sunshine & Smiles has received to develop our Cafe 21 project.

The event was to celebrate 1 million pounds of funding being distributed to over 200 community groups in the UK since the Wesleyan Foundation was created in 2017.

It was also great to be able to thank Leeds Community Foundation and Heart of England Community Foundation who have made it possible for organisations like us to apply for a grant from the Wesleyan Foundation.

Louise Palin, one of our Cafe 21 team, shared some of her thoughts with over 90 people from other beneficiary groups, Wesleyan and local Community Foundations … her last few words summed things up perfectly: help, kindness, people, & cake.

We saw this gesture as a great opportunity to give the Sunshine and Smiles Hub a new lease of life, and got our paint brushes at the ready to freshen the place up! It was a wonderful day, full of hard work, snacks, and a well deserved transformation.

Big thank you to every volunteer from Lloyds Banking Group, especially those who travelled as far as Scotland!
