With the start of the Local Giving ‘Grow Your Tenner’ campaign tomorrow (13th October at 10am) … we thought it would be a good time to share this fabulous ‘info-graphic’ about the work we have done since 2013 and also share with people some of the regular costs we have so that people can see where their donations are going and how much of a difference they make!
£5 – will buy fruit and milk for one of our 0-3 group sessions
£15 – pays for one hour of individual support with a family
£20 – will pay for transport for families who would not otherwise be able to access our groups
£30 – will pay for one of our Mini Movers sessions
£40 – will pay for an interpreter for families who would not otherwise be able to access our support
£80 – pays for a Speech and Language session for up to 5 children or young people
£200 – pays for one of our family group activities
I know we often publicise fundraising challenges, events and activities and we are very conscious of not ‘asking’ too much … but as you can see every penny that is donated really does make a real difference and means we can make sure Sunshine and Smiles is sustainable in the future too!
So thank you very much to everyone for all that you do to support Sunshine and Smiles … and remember from 10am on 13th October all donations up to £10 will be doubled by Local Giving until the Grow Your Tenner funding is all used up .. you can donate here: https://localgiving.com/charity/sunshineandsmiles/
Just a quick round up of activities we have happening over the half term week – 24th – 31st October.
On Saturday 24th we will have our final Mini Movers session with Janice … we will wish her well as she starts a new adventure in Berlin! This is 12.30pm – 2pm at Stainbeck Hall and suitable for ages 2 – 5 years.
On Sunday 25th and Monday 26th we have booked tickets for everyone who requested them to see the Tortoise and the Hare at Northern Ballet – we will email everyone individually to confirm their tickets as it was quite a long time ago that we booked!
On Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th we are very pleased that we have joined up with a scheme called the National Citizen Service to offer two sessions which will be supported by a group of young people aged 15 – 17 years old who are taking part in a project to work alongside a local community group. The sessions will be for our children and young people who are aged between 5 and 10 years old. The first session will be at Stainbeck Community Hall on Wednesday 28th from 1.30pm to 2.45pm and will be a ‘board game’ session where we will ask everyone to bring their favourite game to play and share. This is an opportunity for the young people from NCS to meet our families and get to know us a little bit plus have a better understanding and awareness of Down syndrome.
The next session will be on Thursday 29th October and this will be a mini Olympics session held at Football World from 1.30pm – 3pm. The young people from NCS will help to facilitate a number of small games and activities (a bit like a sports day) with small groups of our children (siblings are also welcome). The idea is to have fun, not to be competitive and we will make sure that the games are inclusive and accessible.
For both activities parents and carers will need to stay with their child or young person and as with all of the trips and activities we arrange we would ask you to help your child or young person to participate and enjoy the session.
We hope that this will be a really positive partnership for us and for the young people from NCS and that they will go away with raised awareness and some new skills and we will have had two fun and positive sessions that our children and young people will enjoy.
We are also looking into a possible trip to see Bear Hunt at West Yorkshire Playhouse – we will keep you posted!
If you have any queries about the half term activities please don’t hesitate to email email@example.com or ring 07902 054355.
We are very pleased to say that we are starting work to develop a New Parents Pack with relevant information and resources for families who have just found out that their baby has Down syndrome – this could be pre-natal or post-natal.
We are hoping to create something balanced and welcoming with enough information to be helpful and reassuring but not too much so as to be overwhelming!
We would really like to hear people’s views on the information that they received (if any), what was helpful, what was not helpful and any other ideas from people about what should go into a pack or initial leaflet.
We have created a web survey and would be very grateful if people would take a few minutes to share their thoughts with us so we can try to get the pack as right as we can! The survey is anonymous.
We are delighted to say that we have booked our Christmas party for Sunday 13th December from 11am – 1pm at the Mercure Parkway Hotel, Otley Road, LS16.
We will have entertainment from Tiny Tempo, Roundhay Ukuleles, facepainting, a raffle and a buffet … plus of course a special visit from Father Christmas!
We do need to start gathering numbers so please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to come letting us know how many people will be coming and the ages of the children attending so Father Christmas knows who to bring presents for!
Each month we are extremely grateful to the huge number of people who fundraise for us or who make donations. As ever this month is no different and we want to say a huge thank you to:
International Personal Finance who raised £920.00 at their Leeds Away Day!
Sue Jowett who has raised £120.00 by having our collection tin the filling station where she works!
The National Federation of Fish Friers who donated £51.90 at the request of an outgoing member, Mr Cunningham, in lieu of the remainder of his membership fee.
Primley Park Children’s Nursery at Alwoodley who held a fabulous garden party to raise funds for us and a fabulous day for everyone who attended too… fundraising total to be confirmed!
The Darling Roses Women’s Institute group who invited to us speak at their recent meeting but who also held a little book sale on the day and then donated lots of fabulous books for our Book Giveaway next year .. we received a lovely £19.49.
Finally, to Skye, Aiyana, Ellis and Isla who did an impromptu table top sale and raised us £2.45!
We are very fortunate to have such wonderful people around us who continue to donate and support Sunshine and Smiles … thank you!!
