We are recruiting….

We are recruiting….

Following our successful funding application to Jimbo’s fund this year we are delighted to let you know that we are now in a position to extend our staffing roles until the end of March 2016.

The roles we have are for a Service Manager and for a number of support workers (all roles are on a self-employed basis). The roles are to manage and facilitate the running of Sunshine and Smiles, staff our groups and activities, to undertake individual support work where necessary and to take part in development work such as talking to and liaising with other agencies and professionals to improve practice and raise awareness.

There are people who have been doing these roles for the last 10 months, and previously on a voluntary basis, but there have been some changes to the job descriptions, the hours available for the support worker posts and we just wanted to ensure that we are transparent and equitable in using this funding and so are sending out the job descriptions and applications for anyone who is interested in applying for any of these roles…. if you would like the job descriptions and application forms please email: sunshineandsmiles@virginmedia.com.

The date for returning applications is Friday 22nd May.

Interviews will be with a panel of our trustees from the week commencing 2nd June. If anyone else is interested in sitting on the interview panel please let us know as it would be great to have other parents and carers involved.

If you have any queries please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Many Thanks

Kind Regards

Katie Kelly

Chair of Trustees

As always .. many, many thank you’s!!!

As always .. many, many thank you’s!!!

Each month we have lots of people to thank for their ongoing support and donations to Sunshine and Smiles … and this month is no different!

Thank you to Max Cookward and Rossett School … Max was made the ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ champion for his year group at school due to his care and kindness towards others and as part of this award he was able to nominate a charity to receive a £50.00 donation … Max kindly nominated Sunshine and Smiles and his £50.00 will go towards an activity or trip for the 4-9’s group.

An amazing well done and thank you to James Balkwill who ran the London Marathon and fundraised for Sunshine and Smiles … to date he has raised £843.00 … thank you James!!

Thank you and congratulations to Elliott Spiby who had all his hair cut off over the Easter holidays so that it could be made into a wig for children who are having treatment for cancer … not only did he do this but he also collected sponsorship for Sunshine and Smiles and so far has raised £273.75 … amazing Elliott .. thank you!

Thank you to Lucie, Danny, Emily and Alice Glover for their generous donation of £100.00.

And thank you to everyone who donates via our Local Giving page on a monthly basis by Direct Debit, to our fundraisers or at our groups … your support is much appreciated and all funds go towards sustaining Sunshine and Smiles!

We also have a fabulous number of people doing fundraising challenges for us at the moment … you can see more about their stories and how to donate here:

https://localgiving.com/charity/sunshineandsmiles and go the ‘Our Fundraisers’ tab.

And lastly … it’s not just about money … obviously we need funds to ensure we are able to offer the groups, activities and individual support we provide and to develop other areas of work such as liaising with health professionals and other agencies such as schools, nurseries etc to raise awareness and challenge preconceptions …. but without all of the families who attend our sessions regularly, without our volunteers, without our staff and trustees … and without so many other connected people who give time, donations and other support … Sunshine and Smiles would not be what it is … so thank you everyone for doing what you do!!!

Possible gymnastics class specifically for pre-school children with Down syndrome

Possible gymnastics class specifically for pre-school children with Down syndrome

Tumble Bees Pre-School Gymnastics have been in touch with us with some exciting news….

A lease has been signed on a studio they have been using for the past year for Pre-School Gymnastics classes and they would like to schedule a Pre-School class dedicated to children with Down syndrome.

The studio will have a facelift, with blue sky walls and flying bees.  The floor will be fully matted and covered in green grass (well vinyl, but we’d like to think of it as grass).  The studio is within  Woodkirk Valley Country Club, Leeds Road, WF12 7JL (not far from Tingley Roundabout).

We’d love to hear from you if you’re interested in a class dedicated to children with Down Syndrome (children will need to be assessed by a qualified medical practitioner regarding progressive myopathy and deemed fit to partake in gymnastics).  Once a form has been signed off children can enjoy a 45 minute class supported by parent/care, a typical session includes:
* Climbing, balancing, jumping, rolling, learning to take turns etc.

* Circle time with action songs

* Stretches/co-ordination, education (e.g. numbers, colours etc.) with hand apparatus

* New skill to try each week

* Parachute fun

* Learn gymnastic shapes
At the end of each session children are rewarded with a bee sticker and hand stamp and at the end of the term (usually around 5 to 8 weeks) they are rewarded with a certificate.

Each term is based on a theme, e.g. ‘Numbers & Colours’, ‘Shopping’, ‘Circus’, ‘Farm’, ‘Healthy Eating’ etc.

The main emphasis of these classes are that children have fun in a structured environment and learn lots of gross and fine motor skills, not to mention the educational element we always bring into classes.

The aim is to run a dedicated class for children with Down syndrome on Wednesdays either morning or afternoon during school hours and school term time.

If you’re interested in such a class then please email: tumblebees@hotmail.co.uk
