On 3rd April 14 parents and two young people took part in a training day for medical professionals around how to tell parents that their baby has Down syndrome.
It was an amazing and emotional day; there were over 60 professionals in attendance – paediatricians, midwives, sonographers, audiologists, students – and the feedback from the day was phenomenal … we will email it out so that you can read it if you are interested!
A massive thank you to everyone who was incredibly courageous in standing up and telling their story…. you made a massive difference!
And hopefully the training will be held again in Leeds so if you didn’t take part this time… there will be another opportunity.
As part of the day we created a pamphlet for attendees to take away with them and Mark Travis created a digital version too… take a look… it is great:
A huge thank you to everyone who supported and sponsored Ailith for her marathon run on 6th April… she finished in 4 hours 44 minutes… and although she would have liked to have been a little bit faster she raised a wonderful £1207.00 for Sunshine and Smiles…
Ailith has now registered for the public ballot for the London Marathon next year!! So watch this space.
This month we have been incredibly fortunate to have been awarded four grants that we applied for.
Soooo… big thanks to Simply Health who have awarded us £1463.86 to buy play equipment for the garden at Stainbeck Hall and also to tidy it up, lay down some play bark and do some planting and then a further £1005.00 to develop an information pack for families who have just been told that their baby has Down syndrome.
Also huge thanks to Leeds University Raise and Give who have awarded us £475.00 to go towards the next twelve months of Speech and Language Sessions.
And enormous thanks to Leeds Community Foundation who awarded us £1000 from their Sport Relief Community Cash fund – again to contribute towards the next twelve months of Speech and Language therapy.
And finally… we are delighted to announce that we were awarded £20,000.00 from Jimbo’s Fund and would like to give our sincere thanks to Leeds Community Foundation and the family of Jim Heselden for making this amazing award to us… the funding is for a variety of things including additional trips and activities for the Saturday family groups, the Socatots sessions on a Wednesday, training courses such as First Aid for families and Makaton for volunteers and there will also be some funding for sessional and freelance staffing to ensure Sunshine and Smiles can become a sustainable and secure organisation for all families in Leeds.
Luke’s amazing Auntie Michelle is running Leeds half-marathon to raise funds for Sunshine and Smiles… we would like to wish Michelle loads of luck and if you have a few spare pennies you can sponsor her by visiting her local giving page https://localgiving.com/fundraising/smiles
Thank you Michelle …. we really appreciate your support… you are amazing!
