Magic Bags!! :-)

Magic Bags!! :-)

Last month we mentioned that we had received some funding to put together a small ‘pack’ for new families … we are delighted to say that we have now given out 5 of our packs which include a magic bag with starter ‘props’, a Singing Hands DVD and a book called Down’s Syndrome – The Essential Guide.

Many, many thanks to Lorna and Sandeep who have made 20 of these beautiful magic bags… they are just gorgeous and the families we have given them to have been delighted!

Speech and Language Groups – Running Over Easter!!

Speech and Language Groups – Running Over Easter!!

Just to let everyone know that the Speech and Language groups will be running next week as usual, at the usual times.

We realise that people may have other siblings with them and so we have arranged to use the office at the hall to run some quiet craft activities with any other children who come along so as not to disturb the session in the main hall.

If you have any questions please email or give us a ring 07902 054355.

School Parent’s Forums – Frances Dine

School Parent’s Forums – Frances Dine

Erin is 5 and attends East Garforth Primary Academy, our local mainstream school.  She is the second child with Down Syndrome to go there.

Recently a group of parents of children with additional needs who attend the school have got together to form a ‘Parents Forum’.  We meet once a month to discuss issues around our children.  We hope that by having a collective voice we can push various agencies for better support for children with additional needs in our part of Leeds, which feels like its seen as fairly affluent and therefore is not well served.

An occupational therapist attended our last meeting to let parents know what may be on offer for their children.

We hope to expand the forum to include other schools in Garforth soon.  Having a child with additional needs in a mainstream setting can sometimes feel lonely, but the forum has made me feel more supported and I’ve been able to pass some of my knowledge on to other parents too.
