On Sunday 8th December many of the children from Sunshine and Smiles performed for the very first time as part of the Snowflakes Signing Choir at Leeds Cathedral.
Snowflakes Signing Choir is a childrens choir using Makaton sign language. For many of the children this is their main way of communicating on a day to day basis due to a range of issues.
Snowflakes are all unique and all beautiful and we think this sums up this choir perfectly.
The performance was part of the Leeds Childrens Heart Surgery Fund Carol Service and many of the children in the choir have had heart surgery or investigations at the Leeds Childrens Heart Unit some still face the uncertainty of further Cardiac and other surgery. The majority of the children in the choir also have Down Syndrome.
The event also marked the retirement of the Head of Surgery, Mr Kevin Watterson. He has done pioneering work in the world of heart surgery and many of the children in the choir would not have been here today if it had not been for the skill, dedication and commitment of him and his team. Sunshine and Smiles would like to thank him for this and wish him a fun and happy retirement.
It was a fantastic event that we were privileged to be a part of.
The choir was co-ordinated by Steph Ward and Sharron Cook and we hope that children and their parents and carers from Sunshine and Smiles are keen to continue being part of the choir as it grows and develops…. watch this space!!
